Today’s queer book review is for She Gets the Girl by Rachel Lippincott and Alyson Derrick.

The cover art for the novel She Gets The Girl

Genre: YA Contemporary Romance

CWs: Alcoholic parent; manipulative family members; social anxiety; internalized racism

Queer rep: Lesbian MCs and a couple of queer secondary characters

Summary: Described as “She’s All That meets What If It’s Us,” this co-authored love story between two freshmen in college is based in part on the real love story of its writers. Alex Blackwood is an experienced flirt with game for days, which is exactly why her girlfriend, Natalie, broke up with her. Molly Parker is the polar opposite—shy, awkward, and unable to get up the courage to even speak to her crush, Cora. In a scheme to win back Natalie and prove she’s not selfish, Alex offers to assist Molly with a five-step plan for getting Cora’s attention. What neither Alex nor Molly planned for was falling for each other in the process of getting other people to fall for them.
